Magnetic Storage

Floppy disc drive

Floppy Drive – These have been available in a number of formats and sizes from 180k – 2.88MB. The default storage size for current drives is 1.44MB.We source our drives from major manufacturers such as Sony, Alps and Matsushita(Panasonic). These were the medium by which most programs were distributed several years ago although most software is now supplied on cd or dvd. These types of devices are becoming less and less popular as they are more being replaced by cdr/dvdr and usb devices. In fact most pc's now dont come with a floppy drive at all. There was a further type of floppy drive called the zip drive with storage of 128MB although these were not that popular outside the APPLE mac G3 and G4 range of computers where they were fitted as standard. The zip drive connects to a standard ide connector while a floppy drive connects to a floppy drive connector.

Hard disc drive

Hard Disks – The hard disk is the component that is used to store your operating system and all your programs and data. They are non volatile which means that they will keep your information even when the computer is switched off. Hard disks are available in a range of popular sizes from 40GB to 2TB and a number of interface types such as IDE, SCSI or SATA1 and SATA2. Hard disk drives are also available in different speeds and cache sizes. Due to advancements in drive design and ways of storing data on the drive 2TB drives are now available with 4TB drives under development. There are many different manufacturers of hard drives. We supply seagate hard drives in all our systems apart from the highest end game systems which use Western Digital Raptor's. All Seagate drives now come with a FIVE year guarantee.

1TB = 1000 GB (Gigabyte) 1GB = 1000MB (Megabyte)

Hard drive come with a variety of interfaces and speeds. The common ones are IDE(now pretty defunct and new mainboards now usually only have 1 or even no IDE connectors), Sata 1 and 2( This is now the standard connector due to it's small size and speed. New mainboards can have 2,4,6,8 or even more sata connectors),scsi(mainly used for servers, drives are very expensive) and sas(pretty rare).

Tape cartridge Tape Devices – There are various types of tape devices available in storage size from 40mb – 40GB and upwards. Due to the high cost and reliability of the blank tapes most users now prefer to use CDR/W or DVDR/W devices. We can however supply a range of tape storage devices upon request.

The common manufacturers of these devices are Seagate, Maxtor(now owned by seagate), western digital, Hitachi, fujitsu etc

Chorley's leading computer shop for Business and home computer repair. Service and Repair of PC's and Apple Mac . When we were looking for premises for 1 Stop Tech shop we had a number of considerations. We wanted to be located in a strategic area at the centre of the motorway network that allowed PJR Micro Ltd to service our business and domestic customers easily and cost effectively. We therefore chose Chorley as this location. As we have continued expanding we quickly realised that our Chorley shop was to small for our purposes. We therefore started looking for new larger premises. There was nothing suitable within the immediate area so we expanded our search further afield, and located a building in Whelley, Wigan which was ideally suited for our purposes which we moved to in 2009. As our business is now going more and more data based we need a premises with fast backbone connection and as the fastest speeds we can obtain at Wigan is 3mb we have amalgamated all our business under one roof at our business service center at Coppull Where we have a 15mb and a 11mb backbone connection. Our Business customers range in areas from Liverpool to Wilmslow and Kendal to York and we have domestic customers all over Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Our new computer shop and premises have extensive offroad parking so short distance to carry sickly pc's.
