After releasing several products under the science of cambridge name including a self assembly computer board( the mk14) the company name was changed to Sinclair research and the first affordable home computer was released
 |
ZX80(1980)- The first real home computer. It came in either self assembly or fully assembled form and was priced at £99. It used the new Z80 processor from Zilog running at 3.25Mhz and had 1KB of ram and a 4KB rom. The early machines suffered from overheating due to the closed case. The black stripes on the top of the machine are in fact cosmetic and not ventilation slots. To cut down on costs video output was to a television rather than to a dedicated monitor and programs were loaded from a standard cassette tape. This ran a version of the basic operating system known as sinclair basic. The zx80 and its later sucessor the zx81 did not offer sound. |
 |
ZX81(1981)- The zx81 came with 1KB of onboard memory which could be extended to 16KB by adding an external ram pack. It produced a monochrome picture and had an 8KB basic rom. The cost of the zx80 was manufactured by Timex in scotland. Its original sales price was £49.95 as a kit or £69.95 fully assembled. It sold more than 1.5 million units before it was discontinued. To show why the zx81 was such a leap forward a similar specification computer the Radio shack trs-80 was selling for £699 at the time. The zx81 didnt have graphics as such as all graphics were made up from a character set of block graphics. A number of peripherals were released for the zx81 including a zx printer and the 16k ram pack which suffered from the notorious ram pack wobble. This was easily cured by the use of blu-tack. |
 |
The ZX spectrum was released in 1982 and is largely credited with starting the uk computer industry. It had a Zilog Z80 processor running at 3.5MHZ and came with a 16KB rom plus either 16KB or 48KB or ram. It ran a much updated version of Sinclair Basic with a much larger character set (the zx80 and zx81 only supported upper case). It also introduced colour as sold in its millions at it's original price of £125 for the 16k version and £175 for the 48k version. It was licenced and cloned many times and earned Sir Clive Sinclair a Knighthood. Over 20,000 software titles have been released for the ZX spectrum to date and software titles are still being released for the machine. It went through a number of revisions namely the zx spectrum +, the 128k, the +2 and the +2a and +3 which were Amstrad produced models. A large number of software houses and hardware manufacturers strated by producing software and peripherals for the zx spectrum. At the point Amstrad ceased production of the +3 in 1990 it still accounted for a third of all home computer sales.
Many unofficial clones of the zx spectrum exist mainly in the eastern block such as Romania and Russia. Over 50 unofficial clones exist and some are still being sold such as the pentagon and atm turbo. Software was initially distributed on cassette tape and later zx microdrive and Amstrad 3" floppy disc.
Several magzines were produced specifically for the zx spectrum and over 80 electronic magazines existed.
Miles gordon technology produced a home computer compatible with the zx spectrum via a "spectrum" mode with a vastly increased specification but this was a commercial failure and the company went into liquidation after selling very few of the machines. |
| |
QL - This was to be Sinclair's business version of the spectrum and although it had a much improved specification it was a commerical failure due to extended delays and it's lack of a proper keyboard. |

Chorley's leading computer shop for Business and home computer repair. Service and Repair of PC's and Apple Mac . When we were looking for premises for 1 Stop Tech shop we had a number of considerations. We wanted to be located in a strategic area at the centre of the motorway network that allowed PJR Micro Ltd to service our business and domestic customers easily and cost effectively. We therefore chose Chorley as this location. As we have continued expanding we quickly realised that our Chorley shop was to small for our purposes. We therefore started looking for new larger premises. There was nothing suitable within the immediate area so we expanded our search further afield, and located a building in Whelley, Wigan which was ideally suited for our purposes which we moved to in 2009. As our business is now going more and more data based we need a premises with fast backbone connection and as the fastest speeds we can obtain at Wigan is 3mb we have amalgamated all our business under one roof at our business service center at Coppull Where we have a 15mb and a 11mb backbone connection. Our Business customers range in areas from Liverpool to Wilmslow and Kendal to York and we have domestic customers all over Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Our new computer shop and premises have extensive offroad parking so short distance to carry sickly pc's.
